Photon Splitting in the Superstrong Magnetic Fields of Pulsars
نویسنده
چکیده
We discuss the polarization selection rules for splitting of the two principal electromagnetic modes that propagate in a vacuum polarized by a superstrong magnetic field (B > 0.1Bcr ' 4 × 10 G). We show that below the threshold of free pair creation the selection rules found by Adler in the limit of weak dispersion remain unaffected by taking the resonant effects into consideration, i.e., splitting of one mode is strictly forbidden, while splitting of the other is allowed. On Radio Quiescence of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars and Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters
In the hot environments of the anomalous X-ray pulsars and the soft gamma-ray repeaters, as indicated by their luminous, pulsed, quiescent X-ray emission, γ-rays generated from the inner gaps may have shorter attenuation lengths via two photon pair production than via magnetic photon splitting. The AXP/SGR environments may not be pairless, even if photon splitting could completely suppress one ...
متن کاملInner Magnetospheric Accelerators in High Magnetic Field Pulsars
Photon splitting is a QED process that can potentially suppress pair production in the inner magnetosphere of a pulsar with a super-strong magnetic field, and hence, may quench radio emission from these objects. While it is unknown how many splitting modes really operate in supercritical fields, we derive gap parameters of a high magnetic field pulsar for both the vacuum-type gap and the space-...
متن کاملPhysical Processes in Strong Magnetic Fields of Neutron Stars
Neutron stars have inferred surface magnetic fields of up to 10 Gauss, in the case of radio pulsars, and up to possibly 10 Gauss, in the case of Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars. In fields this high, QED effects will profoundly change the characteristics of continuum radiation processes such as synchrotron emission and Compton scattering and will also allow the possibility o...
متن کاملRadio Quiet Pulsars with Ultra-strong Magnetic Fields
The notable absence of radio pulsars having measured magnetic dipole surface field strengths above B0 ∼ 3 × 10 13 Gauss naturally raises the question of whether this forms an upper limit to pulsar magnetization. Recently there has been increasing evidence that neutron stars possessing higher dipole spin-down fields do in fact exist, including a growing list of anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) wit...
متن کاملPhoton Splitting and Pair Creation in Highly Magnetized Pulsars
The absence of radio pulsars with long periods has lead to the popular notion of a high P “death line.” In the standard picture, beyond this boundary, pulsars with low spin rates cannot accelerate particles above the stellar surface to high enough energies to initiate pair cascades, and the pair creation needed for radio emission is strongly suppressed. In this paper we explore the possibility ...
